“Many Moons” Story Explorers preschool book club

Read Many Moons by Remi Courgeon.

We made foil moons like this post from Mommy’s Bundle.

We drew in shapes like this post from Pre-k Pages.

I love when moms get into it too.

We smashed “moon rocks” like this post from Pre-k Pages.

Some preferred squishing and squeezing to smashing.

“Go to Sleep, Little Creep!” yoga bedtime storytime

Opening – How I explain the rules of yoga storytime: stay on your mat, and keep your hands to yourself.
(Skip to my Lou –  from Jim Gill)
Clapping hands, one and two
Clapping hands, one and two
But if my hands were covered in glue
I’d stick to the glue, my darling
(hands in Anjali mudra, or prayer position)

Extend and Stretch
Frere Jacques
Extend and stretch (sit in sukasana – easy seated pose, or crisscross applesauce- and do seated side bends)
Extend and stretch
Twist and turn (seated twists)
Twist and turn
This is yoga, (hands overhead on “this,” then bring to prayer position on “yoga”)
This is yoga
Om sweet om, (hands in prayer, bow forward)
Om sweet om

Halloween sun salutations
Hello, bats. Flap, flap, flap
Hello, worms. Squirm, squirm, squirm.
Place your hands on the floor. 1,2
And step back. 3,4
Lower your belly to the leaves on the floor.
Aoooo. howl at the moon so pale
Lift up to shake your werewolf tail
Bend your knees. Jump your feet up please.
Take a deep breath in
And feel the magic deep within.

To “turn the page,” open just the right arm and close it, then the left arm and close it. Repeat “turning pages” until the kids giggle. Repeat the whole sequence using legs instead of arms. Then try arms and legs together.

The Moon Shines
The moon (bring arms over head) is shining all around.
It shines on land (standing side bend) and sea (standing side bend other side).
It shines on cars (dandasana/staff pose, pretend to drive car).
It shines on boats (navasana/ boat pose.)
It shines on you and me. (hands at heart)

Animals Yawning
butterfly – baddha konasana
owl –  seated twists, saying “hoo” like an owl on each side
cat/cow
puppy – anahatasana

Crown, Heart, Tail. I saw this when I observed a Kids Crave Yoga class. Ask the kids where their head or crown is. Then where is their heart. Then tail (or where their tail would be). Repeat. Shake up the order: Heart, tail, crown. Tail, tail, crown, heart. Go faster and faster, and then slow it down. I love that these movements correspond to the 1st, 4th, and 7th chakras.

Savasana
Song: Kira Willey’s “When You Sleep”

Peace begins with me
Hold both hands overhead. On the word “peace,” touch the thumbs and pinky fingers together. On the word “begins,” touch the thumbs and ring fingers. On the word “with,” touch the thumbs and middle fingers. On the word “me,” touch the thumbs and pointers. Repeat this four times, the first time loudly and hands overhead. The second time, bring the hands down a little and speak a little softer. The third time, bring hands lower and whisper. The last time, bring hands to knees and speak words silently to self.

“I Want My Hat Back” Story Explorers preschool book club

Read I Want my Hat Back by Jon Klassen.

I used Literary Hoots for two of our activities today.

First we made hats like this post from Playing by the Book.

We ate a rabbit like this post from Betty Crocker. I used rice cakes instead of pancakes so I didn’t have to cook.

Since the bear helped the turtle onto a rock in the story, we also made rock turtles like this post from Kitchen Floor Crafts.

“Sam Sorts” Story Explorers preschool book club

Read Sam Sorts by Marthe Jocelyn.

We sorted colors with office supply stickers like this post from Busy Toddler.

Even the younger siblings liked this one.

We sorted mini sea life erasers from Oriental Trading.

We graphed with gummy bears like this post from Pre Kinders.

And by far the most difficult of the stations, we sorted letters into upper and lower cases.

“Sticky!” little ones event

This month we focused on a sticky theme at our little ones event. The idea was to play with tape, velcro, slime, and things that are sticky. We host this event at the library on the second Tuesday of the month and the following Saturday.

We built with velcro blocks and craft sticks like this post from One Creative Mommy.

We made a contact paper collage.

We threw the velcro balls towards a target.

We made sticker roller paintings like this post from No Time for Flashcards.

This mom got creative and used the foam stickers as stamps on her hand.

But by far the favorite station was the slime station. I usually use the metamucil/kool aid slime recipe in case the littles eat it, but today I used this recipe from Tater Tots and Jello.

One boy decided it would be fun to dump all the slime into his lap. (Sorry, mom.) Trick to getting slime out of clothes? Use an ice cube to harden the slime.

“Motor Goose” Story Explorers preschool book club

Read Motor Goose by Rebecca Colby.

We did a Humpty Dumpty egg balancing challenge, with spoons and egg shakers.

Uh oh! Traffic jam! Love mom’s face.

A fabulous coworker made me a clock out of cardboard and mice from our 3D printer. We sang Hickory Dickory Dock while racing the mice.

We painted with monster trucks like this post from Play to Learn Preschool.

And by far the crowd pleaser, we played with construction vehicles in the sand box.
