“Shine” yoga storytime

Opening – How I explain the rules of yoga storytime: stay on your mat, and keep your hands to yourself.

Sun Salutations – The Sun Dance by Bari Koral

Open the Book
Arms, legs, both
Close the book. Open the book. Turn the page.
Start seated with arms stretched out in front of you, palms touching. To “open the book,” stretch the arms wide. To close it, bring them back together. To “turn the page,” open just the right arm and close it, then the left arm and close it. Repeat “turning pages” until the kids giggle. Repeat the whole sequence using legs instead of arms. Then try arms and legs together. 

We talked about letting our hearts shine, about letting ourselves see the beauty in everything around us and being happy.

-Little Hoshi – Five pointed star
-Every night she would gaze at the twinkling stars – supine star pose, sit up and reach for the stars. Repeat the sit up motion.
-colorful coral – fish/matsyasana and crab walk
-minnows – salabhasana/locust pose, swim your arms and legs
-whale – cat/cow (pretend to use blowhole when in cat pose)
-“I want to shine” – turtle pose
-down to the murky bottom – forward fold/uttanasana
-close eyes and make a wish – sukhasana/crisscross apple sauce and close eyes, make wish
-pointed to her heart and shined – camel/ustrasana (the Care Bear Stare of yoga, ha!)
-swam up –  uttanasana to ardha uttanasana to tadasana/ forward fold to 1/2 way up to standing in mountain
-so many endless and exciting possibilities – bear twists. Standing twist from side to side swinging arms wide.

I passed around glow sticks for this song and turned off the lights so we could watch ourselves shine.

Star Breath – I used these stars from Omazing Kids yoga.

“Teddy Bear Picnic” little ones event

Summer has been INSANE here so far, and our little ones events have been the most attended.

Sixty people vistied with Pocahontas and a Galatic Warrior from Wands and Wishes for stories and adventure.

We had 135 people in attendance for our Funny Bunny Magic Show with Connie Elstun. (If anyone doubts that we need a larger library with more programming space, that number alone is your proof.)

And our Teddy Bear picnic had 95 people at the library and 35  at our repeat outreach event!

We started the picnic with an active reading of Going on a Bear Hunt by Michael Rosen like this post from Weekend Notes. I used green crepe paper for the grass, I placed a blue blanket in our kiddie pool for the river, and I used a brown tarp for the mud. (I skipped the rest of the verses.)

We made teddy bear snacks like this. We didn’t toast the bread, and I used sunflower butter instead of peanut butter to be safe.

We used plastic forks to paint teddy bears like this post from Crafty Morning.

We graphed and sorted and enhanced our early math skills with gummy bears like this post from Pre-Kinders. I only used the graph and the color sorting printables for the sake of time.

We practiced threading and fine motor skills by making edible honeycomb necklaces and bracelets like this post from You are the Roots because, of course, bears love honey!

Both the kids and the teddy bears had a lovely time today!

Early literacy tip: Take a trip to the aquarium or a pet store to look at the frogs. See if you can find them in nature! Talk about tadpoles and metamorphosis.

“Space!” little ones event

This month we held an outer space event at the library twice (Tues and Sat mornings) and at an outreach event (Thursday morning). May is sadly a notoriously slow month attendance-wise, but those who came had a BLAST.

We charted our own constellations like this post.

We tied sponges to our feet and walked on the moon in our space shoes.
 

We made rockets that blasted off into space. I modified this post because I didn’t have plastic pipettes. We simply colored 2 rockets and then taped them together leaving a hole at the bottom for the straw. Make sure to tape the rockets together, leaving no holes for air to escape through.

We learned how craters in the moon are formed and how planets orbit the sun.

We studied moon rocks in our outer space exploration suit.

We guided our rocket ships into and out of space safely with our NASA control center from this post.

Crown, Heart, Tail. I saw this when I observed a Kids Crave Yoga class. Ask the kids where their head or crown is. Then where is their heart. Then tail (or where their tail would be). Repeat. Shake up the order: Heart, tail, crown. Tail, tail, crown, heart. Go faster and faster, and then slow it down. I love that these movements correspond to the 1st, 4th, and 7th chakras.

We talked about mindfulness. Mindfulness is paying attention to something. For adults, mindfulness is paying attention on purpose, without judgment.

cement mixer – standing forward fold/uttanasana
duck – malasana, flap arms and quack
ice cream – ask each child what scoop they would put on their ice cream cone. “Build” a cone and add each child’s choice to the top. Stretch taller with each addition.

butterfly – baddha konasana, flap your butterfly wings

Mindfulness Exercise
I read about this in an article for yoga for children with special needs. It’s similar to an exercise I have done with bean bags. For the bean bag activity, tell the children to place a bean bag on their heads and run across the room, keeping the bean bag on their heads without holding on to it with their hands. It’s almost impossible. But if you walk slowly and mindfully, you can balance the bean bag on your head with less difficulty. This activity was similar but uses bells. Give the children a bell. Have them walk across the room with their bells. Their bells probably ring. Have them walk slowly and mindfully, trying to get the bells to stay quiet.

“No Bake Food Fiesta” little ones event

April is One Book 4 Colorado month, in which every 4-year-old in the state of Colorado receives a free picture book! This year’s giveaway title is Mouse Mess by Linnea Riley, and to celebrate, we made a mess of our own! We  held this event twice: once at the library and once at an outreach event in Severance.

I laid a spread of food out for the kids to choose from and encouraged them to combine foods. I gave them plastic cutlery so they could practice their fine motor skills. Whip cream and cookie sandwiches were, by far, the favorite meal both days.

Early literacy tip: Talk about numbers, orderings, correspondences, and patterns as you read picture books. Read the book through first, and then reread it to discuss the mathematical ideas. Name groups of things children see on the pages with numbers and shape names, such as, “Look at those three beautiful flowers. What shape are those petals?” After sharing stories that invite children to compare sizes, such as chairs, bowls, and beds in “Goldilocks and the Three Bears,” invite children to order sticks or blocks by lengths. Then give them further opportunities to classify by sorting buttons, bottle caps, and leaves.

Car – Staff pose/ dandasana. Get in the car. Point toes on one foot, then the other like pressing the gas and brake. (Yes, kids, don’t drive with two feet; this is just to stretch both legs and feet equally.) Twist to either sides as you drive.
Volcano – Goddess/utkata konasana. Jump up to erupt.
Parachute – balloon breath.
Shark – locust pose/ shalabasana Use hands over head like shark fin, or – if you have older kids who will call you out on where a dorsal fin is – hands in reverse namaste for  fin. Swim to each side, rolling over and coming back to center.
When Max thinks about his toys, come into sukhasana/ easy seated pose. Close your eyes, with hand over heart or on knees.

Warrior poses
Virabhadrasana I/Warrior I – Say, “I am strong.”
Virabhadrasna II/Warrior II – Say, “I am brave.”
Viparita Virabhadrasana/Reverse warrior – Say, ” I am peaceful.”
Virabhadrasana III/Warrior III – Say, “I am a superhero.”
Repeat on the other side.

Superhero Training
Bubble breath. First we practiced keeping the bubbles in the air with our breath. This quickly devolved into popping bubbles and a general bubble frenzy. I use this bubble machine. 

Lifting weights. I used a dowel and styrofoam discs to create dumbells.
