Sensory storytime

We started a sensory storytime for kiddos with special needs last year. It has been slow to take off, but I had a parent tell me about a facebook group for moms of kids with special needs, so hopefully the word will spread.

This is actually a local author, and one of the characters in the story uses a wheelchair.

Therabands
Some kids don’t like these because they use them in physical therapy so I may rethink this one.

We have 10 copies of this board book so all of the families can hold a copy and read together.

Sensory Playtime
We have sensory tiles like these, kinetic sand, and water beads. We only get out one sensory toy for playtime per storytime.

Twinkle Twinkle Flannel
I give each kid a flannel star to place on the feltboard while we sing Twinkle Twinkle Little Star.

Bubbles – best bubble machine ever! (IMHO, of course)

For this book, I had the kids jump up and down when it says to shake the book. We just did a different pose everytime the characters got mixed up.
First pose: Triangle/trikonasana on right side
Second pose: (Upside down) Downward facing dog/adho mukha svanasana
Third pose: (characters in the gutter of the page) happy baby/ananda balasana
Fourth: (world is upside down) legs up the wall/viparita karani
Fifth: (kid is doing this on purpose) eagle/garudasana
Sixth: (nope! again!) goddess pose/utkata konasana
Seventh: (like a gorilla!) eagle/garudasana on the other side
Eighth: (Hm) malasana/garland pose
Ninth: (this looks familiar) trikonasana/triangle on left
Resting: sukhasana/easy seated pose
